INPI Recognizes the First Wine Geographical Indication of 2022

According to the documentation submitted to the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI), the history of Bituruna’s wines began in the mid-1940s. Immigrants who had settled in the state of Rio Grande do Sul moved to the Santa Bárbara Colony, which would later become the municipality of Bituruna.
The patriarchs of these families, who maintained a tradition of wine consumption, brought grapevine seedlings with them for their own use. Years later, they decided to begin producing wine for sale in the city.
Bituruna produces traditional Bordô wine, as well as wine made from Casca Dura Martha grapes, which has a distinctive pink color characteristic of the region.
Among the factors that contributed to the recognition of its production are the genetic improvement of the grapes, the industrialization of traditional production methods, and the Wine Festival, which attracts thousands of tourists to the municipality every year.
In 2020, the government of the State of Paraná granted Bituruna the official title of “Wine Capital” through state legislation.
