On April 26, World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated, and the theme chosen for 2021 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) highlights the importance of intellectual property as a driver of innovation and creativity among Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, under the theme: “IP & SMEs: Taking Your Ideas to Market.”

The initiative seeks to encourage IP-related actions involving all those who, in one way or another, can contribute to its dissemination, creating an environment that supports the development and implementation of innovations capable of fostering business growth and generating positive economic and social impacts.

Finding the path that allows a good idea to move beyond the drawing board and become a product or service available to society is a demanding process that requires considerable determination. However, the use of the right tools can play a vital role in this journey. This is precisely where Intellectual Property can provide significant support.

Prior research into new technologies and market trends can help anticipate obstacles and identify opportunities for development within a particular field. Being able to streamline certain stages through such research can reduce costs and accelerate the creative process, allowing efforts to be concentrated on what truly needs to be solved or improved.

These precautions are also essential to ensure that no unlawful conduct is being committed in relation to third-party intellectual property, including the unauthorized use or misappropriation of intangible assets belonging to others.

With this in mind, WIPO encourages professionals working in the IP field to organize or participate in events aimed at bringing this information to local Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, combining efforts to promote innovation and the socioeconomic development of their communities.
