Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement

On August 29, 2022, the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies approved Draft Legislative Decree No. 274/2022. The proposal anticipated Brazil’s accession to the Hague Agreement, which governs the international registration of industrial designs.
The Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement provides for simplified procedures and reduced costs for applicants seeking industrial design protection abroad, as well as for foreign applicants seeking protection in Brazil.
Following accession to the Agreement, a Brazilian applicant would be able to file a single international industrial design application, administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and request protection in the other 94 contracting countries.
For Brazil to complete its accession to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement, the proposal still required review and approval by the Federal Senate.
